Luke's Van Modification

In August 2013, our son Luke was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 3.  Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a disease that robs people of physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat or breathe.  It is the number one genetic cause of death for infants.   Luke is blessed with the ability to walk with the assistance of a walker for short distances. Since he easily fatigues, he relies on a power wheelchair for longer distances.  He also uses his powerchair to be able to "run" with his family and friends.  His powerwheelchair weighs over 300 pounds so lifting it in and out of our family van is not an option.  Therefore, we need to modify our van to  bring his wheelchair anywhere he needs or wants to.   
Unfortunately, insurance does not cover any vehicle modifications so it is up to us to cover this large expense.  We are planners and planned for our children's future, but never anticipated this expense to be able to provide our child with the ability to "run" with other children.
