This is the first time I’ve ever done something like this, so please bear with me. Last night, my daughter had to rush her 7-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, Luke, to BluePearl Pet Hospital because he was struggling to breathe. Earlier that day, she had taken him to the vet where X-rays and blood work were done to determine what was wrong.

After reviewing the X-rays, the veterinarians suspected that Luke inhaled a seed during a hunt, which became lodged in his lungs and caused a severe infection. As the infection progressed, fluid began filling his lungs, making it extremely difficult for him to breathe. He was kept overnight as doctors ran additional blood tests, performed more X-rays, and sent everything to Iowa State Veterinary for further review. Luke was also sedated so they could safely collect a sample of the fluid in his lungs.

The results confirmed pyothorax, a life-threatening condition. Thankfully, bringing him in when she did may have saved his life. He is scheduled to receive a CT scan and will need surgery to remove the seed and repair the damage to his lungs. The estimated total cost for his care is around $20,000.

My daughter used her savings to cover a $6,000 emergency deposit just for the first night. She and her fiancé recently welcomed a new baby and are currently living on one income. She would never ask for help herself, and while I would give everything I have to help, I simply don’t have the financial ability — which is why I’ve started this fundraiser.

Luke still has so much life, love, and joy to share. Letting him go when he can be saved is not an option for them. Any donation, no matter the amount, would be deeply appreciated and would help ease the financial burden during this overwhelming and emotional time.
