Luke's Cataract Surgery Fund

Donation protected
Hi, My name is Luke I am 25 years old, I am a full-time electric wheelchair user as I suffer from a condition called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) which is a progressive genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.

I have got cataracts in both eyes due to a medication I take to maintain my muscle strength. The cataracts have stayed dormant for a few years, but this year they suddenly started to increase in size and have started to affect my eye sight. In bright light I need to squint to see a little clearer, I have significant halos, starbursts and glare which appear around light sources, especially in the dark and my vision is blurred in bright light.

I currently drive my own wheelchair accessible vehicle which really helps to keep me
independent. Unfortunately I soon won’t be able to drive due the cataracts getting worse.

The NHS can only offer monofocal lenses (one distance), which would not be suitable as I am
physically unable to change multiple glasses throughout the day due to my arms being weak from DMD.

Video games are one of my escapes from reality, as they enable me do things I could not physically do in real life, the cataracts are now starting to affect me in games with bright scenes which is taking some fun out of playing them.

The cataract surgery I am raising funds for would give me the chance to stay independent for longer as it would mean I would have the highest chance of not needing to wear glasses after the surgery.

The money I am raising will help to pay for the consultations, the surgery and aftercare.

Thanks for taking the time to read.
