HATTIE, Luke Edward
November 21, 1994 - April 28,2020
As you all know sadly we lost our beloved Luke Edward Hattie, age 25 suddenly and unexpectedly to a heart attack on April 28, 2020.
In Memory of Luke and to honor him and his great love of learning, we have begun the Luke Hattie Memorial Award for Academic Excellence in Science. This monetary donation will be awarded to a graduating Grade 12 student of Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School, Yarmouth Class of 2021.
The student that most demonstrates Academic Excellence in Science will receive this award to assist financially in furthering their Education.
The Luke Hattie Memorial Award for Academic Excellence in Science will come from donations made in Luke’s memory. As many of his friends, family and colleagues have asked where they could make a contribution we all felt that a scholarship in his name would be a fitting tribute to an amazing young man. Luke would be so happy to know he was aiding in another student’s success. With this award in place, a fellow YCMHS Alumni will have some financial relief towards tuition costs.
On Luke's path in life, learning, was something he never, ever stopped doing himself, and encouraging in others. Learning both through study but also in life experiences. From a very young age, he was fascinated with Science and was often found with his brother Daniel performing many hands on experiments, building things and taking things apart to see how they worked. They would then happily explain their scientific findings to family members in terms we would understand.
Through hard work and lots of study Luke accomplished an impressive academic record. He graduated from the IB Program with honors at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School in 2013. From there he attended the Science program at Memorial University in St. John's NFLD. At Memorial Luke met and graduated with his loving fiancee, Bailey McNutt. Luke graduated with a Bachelor of Science with honors in June of 2017. During the summer of 2015 Luke and Bailey volunteered to work in an Elephant Sanctuary in Thailand where they worked directly with the elephants and helped to build an actual home. Luke's thesis which he co-authored was based on the research he did at Memorial and was published in the Journal of Peptide Science in 2018. It can be read at onlinelibrary.wiley.com, "Characterization of a Peptide containing the major heparin binding lipase." In May of 2017 Luke was accepted into the Dalhousie University Master of Science Program where he graduated with his Master of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in September 2019. A second scientific article that Luke wrote is going to be published as well. Luke also enjoyed sharing his knowledge and mentoring his younger colleagues in the Dalhousie lab where he was working doing research. In November 2019 Luke was also accepted into the Canadian Air Force Reserves as an Armor Officer. And just days prior to his passing he had accepted a position as a Bioanalytical Scientist with Bio Vectra Inc in Windsor, NS. where he would be doing his favorite work, Research.
Many know Luke as being a good person, thoughtful, kind, and caring. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always helpful when he could be. He loved his family, friends and his fiancee. He enjoyed nature and animals and was trying to make a positive impact on the Earth by living in an environmentally conscious way. Luke made a lasting impression on all those who knew him.
He lived life with passion every day and his life is an inspiration to us all.
