My name is Lujza Nehrebeczky and I was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary. Although I live in the US now, I keep up daily with news from my homeland. In the past months, images of refugees pouring into Hungary from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea and other countries have been ubiquitous in the international media. We have all heard that the government of Hungary did not treat the refugees in accordance with international conventions.
What we didn't hear so much about were the thousands of Hungarian civilians who have been volunteering every day to make the refugees' stay a bit easier. In a matter of weeks, a grassroots relief movement led entirely by ordinary citizens sprang up to support the people fleeing their war-torn countries. These folks have been preparing halal meals, distributing baby supplies, providing sleeping mats and blankets, entertaining children, and much more.
I'm not proud of the actions of my government, but I'm incredibly proud of the actions of my people. I have a fervent wish to contribute, but it's difficult from across the ocean. As a Hungarian citizen, I feel it's my responsibility to take part in this relief effort personally. My purpose is twofold: to travel to Hungary in order to participate in caring for the refugees, and to purchase supplies for citizens' groups coordinating volunteers and donations both in Hungary and beyond its borders.
I'm fluent in Hungarian and the culture is my own. I will be staying with my mother in Budapest, so I don't need any funds for room or board. What I do need is airfare and funds to purchase daily necessities for the refugees. All donations left over from covering my airfare ($990) will be spent on specific supplies as directed by the citizens' volunteer groups. Because the list of needed supplies changes daily, purchasing or donating goods in the US to transport to Hungary would not be practical.
Thank you for considering supporting my mission to help care for the refugees still pouring into Hungary. Your donations will make a difference in the midst of a humanitarian crisis unseen in Europe since World War II.
