Luis's medical struggles and lost savings

These words are from my mother and her experience, I am helping with the gofundme page, please take the time to read, even if you don't donate. He is a hard working man who came to the U.S. for his family, a better opportunity and life. He's lost so much weight from when I last saw him, I wouldn't want him working in his poor health.

"Luis Alonso has been my gardener for over twenty years; showed up every week ready to give it his all.
In March, Luis hadn’t shown for three weeks (not like him) and had no cell phone to call him directly. His
only cell phone was with his wife of forty-five plus years. She has a terminal kidney condition and six
months prior to March 2023, her condition worsened. Requiring extensive care and dialysis three days a
week, he and his daughter made the hard decision of sending his wife to live with their only daughter in
Indiana. Luis needed to work to send money for his wife’s care and to pay for the day to day expenses at
home.
In April, my husband and I finally get a hold of the wife who let us know that Luis was in the hospital
after emergency open heart surgery. He had been in the hospital the entire month. She could do
nothing for him, and their daughter left mom in Indiana with a caregiver to be by her dad’s side. We
learned that prior to being hospitalized, Luis was being evicted from his rented home in LA, after 35
years of living and maintaining the premises free of charge and never missed a rent payment. The new
apartment building owners said they needed the apartment for the owner’s family member. Shortly
after that, we spoke to the daughter who said her dad was under an immense amount of stress and
thinks this could’ve contributed to his heart issues.
When we went to visit him the first time, he was in pain, curled up in a ball and we didn’t dare disturb
him. We recruited people to pray for him and a few weeks later went to visit him again. He didn’t look
like himself- he looked frail, old, and sad. He told us his wife was giving up dialysis, she couldn’t take it
anymore. Doctors would give her only a few days to live, without dialysis. Luis felt helpless, he was too
weak to do anything for his wife, he was being evicted from his home, and his daughter had to return to
Indiana, as she had taken much time to care for her dad. He never complained or asked why him.
We spoke to the daughter before she left to Indiana, and she told us she was beyond sad that she had to
leave her dad. She needed to return to Indiana to take care of her mom and go back to work. She had
had to drop out of nursing school when her mom got sick. She asked us to please look after her dad.
My husband and I were able to get Luis in touch with a renters advocate group to ensure he wasn’t
taken advantage of. We got people to pray for him and were able to get in touch with some of his
gardening accounts to let them know he was sick.
When we went to see him on April 22, 2023, he looked so much better. Most our prayers were
answered. Most important to him was that his wife decided she would continue dialysis. Somehow his
daughter was able to get her transferred to California, where they approved convalescent care for her at
the same facility as her husband. So grateful. They are giving the wife about a year to live. Luis was so
excited that he would get to see his wife after over six months of separation, and he would get to say
good-bye. Meanwhile, a housing organization is assisting in finding Luis a place to live when he gets out.
We asked him questions about his needs now- so that we could pray. He told us he wants to get better
quickly so that he could go back to work. Luis had managed to save $12K- his life savings. Luis is the only
one working and paying all bills and taxes. When he got sick, he exhausted his life savings in paying rent,
bills and his wife’s care.
We want to replenish his savings if possible. If not possible, at least give him some cushion that can help
him to get back on his feet.

Luis is one of the kindest, humblest, hardest working people I know. He is a good man- who pays his
taxes and his bills. IRS has sent a letter reminding him to file his taxes. He is very worried about that, but
we let him know there are extensions. He is trying to take out a loan to ensure he doesn’t fall behind on
any payment.
Please join me in praying for his situation. Please join me in giving what you can for Luis to get back on
his feet. The most important thing to him is that his wife is doing better and he’ll see her soon, and that
he is gaining his health so he can return to work. He is very grateful that his daughter will rest a little
easier knowing that mom and dad are together and receiving care. However, there are bills and they are
piling up and he has no money left. Please help Luis."
