Hello! My name is Luis Carlos Pruneda and I am currently a freshman at San Jose State University. I am also an artist, the youngest of three, a soccer fan, and one day, a college graduate.
I came to this country when I was one year old after my parents separated. I grew up with the best mom in the world, my two beautiful sisters, loving uncles, aunty, and grandparents. They taught me to be a good person, to work hard, and above all, to pursue my dreams.
Going to and graduating college is one of those dreams. It has not always been an easy journey, but I am grateful to finally be here. I would like to ask for your help so that I can continue my education here at SJSU.
Aside from being all of those things I mentioned when I introduced myself, I would also like to share with you that I am an undocumented student. Even though I arrived to the United States when I was a baby, my immigration status has not been adjusted. Obtaining legal residency is a slow and costly process that our family has been going through for some time. Because I am undocumented I do not qualify for most financial aid, loans, many scholarships, and even certain jobs on campus.
However, I have not been discouraged by my circumstances. In fact, I applied and was accepted into an incredible mentorship program that helped me find donors interested in helping students like me go to college. I was awarded two scholarships that allowed me to pay for my first semester. Next year, I will be awarded the same scholarship and I will qualify for a grant that will help me pay for a larger portion of my expenses.
My biggest need is for this spring semester, which is quickly approaching. I know that the holidays are upon us and that we could all use a little extra change in our pockets; but if there is anything you can donate towards my education, I would deeply appreciate it. You are not just giving me $1, $5, or $20 (Wow! Thank you for your generosity) you are giving me a college education and the tools that I will need to be successful in my career and beyond.
I am passionate about becoming a college graduate. I know that the best way to help my family and give back to my community is by pursuing a higher education. When I graduate, with your help, I want to become a mentor to young men and women in my community and encourage them to reach their goals.
Thank you for your contribution towards my dream and for becoming an important part of it. If you cannot donate today, please share this with someone who might be able to spare a few dollars and ask them to pass this along too! I cannot express just how much I appreciate your kindness and support. Once again, thank you!
Love,
Luis Carlos Pruneda
