If you know Luis you know he has been on a long journey toward getting healthy both mentally and physically, and we are beyond grateful that you are here joining the journey. There have been many moments of triumph on this journey but also so much pain and setbacks. At the beginning of 2020 Luis, Silvia and their two littles moved to Salem seeking to make some changes towards being healthier as a family. Luis started eating better, working out and found a social service job. Towards May he noticed something wasn’t right with his digestion and tried to get medical help. Doctors kept saying it was possibly acid reflux, a food alergy or IBS. Turns out it was diverticulitis and the infection was not detected, and allowed to take a massive toll on his colon. Now in 2021 the doctors finally able to understand what was happening told him he needed a colectomy. Luis moved forward on the surgery, being told it would be a 3-5 day hospital stay and 2-4 week recovery. Two days after the surgery they discovered that the colectomy hadn’t worked and there was massive contamination in his abdomen. They rushed him to a second surgery, and he is currently fighting a difficult infection, and will have to return for a 3rd surgery after one year of fully clearing the infection. He is stable and getting better every day, but his recovery time frame will be several months long. We’ve decided to create this GoFundMe in order to help with the medical bills and to help cover some of his family’s basic needs while he is not working (he has insurance but deductible is $1500 and since he’s only been at his new job for 10 months he only has 1 ½ weeks of paid leave). Thank you for taking this time to support the Magañas, they are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love during this time.
