My husband, Luis Alberto Lopez, was first diagnosed with heart failure more than 17 years ago. He has been able to live a healthy and fulfilling life thanks to the several surgeries he has had throughout the years but unfortunately, this past year has been extremely difficult for him.
We were told that with the Pacemaker & Defibrillator he had implanted was only deteriorating with time and sure enough, before we knew it we were going in and out of the hospital. On February 11, 2017, my husband had a major heart a failure. He was in the hospital in Brownsville for about a week but while were there the Cardiologist told us that his heart was only working at 10%. On February 16, 2017, the doctors agreed that my husband should be transferred as an emergency to Houston, TX. He was flown immediately through air ambulance. During our stay in Houston, we have had many ups and downs.
On March 3, 2017, he underwent surgery to implement a mechanical heart pump know as a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD). This was implanted inside his chest to help his weak heart to pump more blood. Unlike a total artificial heart, the LVAD does not replace his heart but helps it do its job. This at times means the difference between life and death. This device will help him to have a good quality life in the meantime he qualifies for a heart transplant. He is already on the waiting list!
We still remain in Houston but we are hopeful and confident that my husband will soon be out of danger. Due to the long recovery, we will have to remain in Houston for about two more months just to keep him close to St. Luke’s in case something goes wrong. He is going to physical therapy and weekly monitoring with this doctors.
This leads me to ask for your help. Thank God my husband insurance covered 80% of everything but my family and I will have to cover the remaining 20% of the medical expenses and the living expenses that involve living temporarily in another city. This fundraising campaign has been created to help us during this difficult time. Your contribution will help us to reach this goal. Durante nuestra estancia en Houston hemos tenido muchos altibajos.
El 3 de marzo de 2017 se sometió a la cirugía para implementar una bomba de corazón mecánica conocida como dispositivo de asistencia ventricular izquierda (LVAD). Esto fue implantado dentro de su pecho para ayudar a su corazón débil a bombear más sangre. A diferencia de un corazón artificial total, el LVAD no reemplaza su corazón, sino que le ayuda a hacer su trabajo. Esto a veces significa la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte. Este dispositivo le ayudará a tener una vida de buena calidad mientras tanto él califica para un trasplante de corazón. ¡Ya está en la lista de espera!
Todavía permanecemos en Houston, pero tenemos la esperanza y la confianza de que mi marido pronto estará fuera de peligro. Debido a la larga recuperación, tendremos que permanecer en Houston por unos dos meses más para mantenerlo cerca del Hospital St. Luke en caso de que algo salga mal. Él está pasando bajo terapia física y monitoreo semanal con su equipo de doctores.
