Hello, my name is Luigi Garcia. I was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in 2011 when I was 13 years old. I am 24 years old and live with my wife and 5-year-old daughter. In 7th grade, I joined my middle school football team; during my first game, I was hit on my right knee with a helmet, causing swelling and pain. As the week went by, I had pain until one day; I felt a very sharp pain in my leg that I couldn't walk or bear weight. Due to my inability to walk or stand, my mom and I visited our local ER for further evaluation. After getting evaluated and x-rays done, the doctor in the ER informed us there was something in my knee that shouldn't be there. After the doctor told us about his finding in the x-ray, we had to wait for a specialist for further evaluation. After speaking to the specialists and countless x-rays on my right leg and lungs, the specialist concluded that I had rear cancer known as Osteosarcoma. He also mentioned that I had a mass on my right knee the size of a gulf ball and that tumors were spreading to my lungs, causing them to have over 200 tiny tumors. After three months after my diagnosis in march 2012, I had my first surgery ever on my knee at the Texas Children's Hospital Located in Houston by the surgeon Rexx Marco. After surgery, Dr.Marco informed me that my femur and knee were too affected by cancer and that they had to remove the bone above my knee and replace it with a titanium rod. A month after my surgery, I had to be taken to the Texas Children's Hospital, 7 hours away from my home, to get treated for an infection on my leg due to my body's rejection of the titanium rod. After trying to save my leg an additional six times and treating infection after infection in 2015, I decided to get my leg amputated. After recuperating from my amputation in 2016, I could walk again due to an above-knee prosthetic, which I used for about four years.
However, after being in remission for about six years in 2020, I was again diagnosed with osteosarcoma. I was informed I had three calcified masses in my lungs, and my right leg stump also had a tumor. In May of 2022, the three masses in my lungs were removed by surgery, and in November of the same year, my right stump got disarticulated. Due to my disarticulation, my prosthetic is not usable anymore, and I will need to get a new one since now I only have my hip and not my stump. Even though I got treated for cancer after my treatment in August of 2021, I started working again as a receptionist at the clinic where I used to work. However, in February of 2022, I had to decide to leave my job due to other medical reasons not related to cancer. Even though I don't have an official job, my wife and I make fruit trays for family and friends to be able to pay bills and other personal stuff we need for our daughter and us.
I have medical insurance through the state; however, my insurance has already denied the cost of my prosthetic three times due to my age of 21. The prosthetics cost is $40,000-$60,000. As you can see, my wife and I don't have that kind of money to pay for my prosthetics. With that said, I have started this gofundme to collect funds through donations to pay for it and other bills, for example, our car, utilities and other expenses that we are behind on. Today's date is 08/28/2022; my wife started working three weeks ago and is also attending her last semester for her associate degree in teaching. She will continue her education for two more years to get her bachelor's. While she works, I stay home, clean the house, help her with my daughter, for example, homework, prepare her for school the next day, and make dinner for us three. Any donations would be greatly appreciated, and if you can't donate, we ask for a prayer for our family to overcome this obstacle. We want to take the time to thank you for taking the time to read my story.
God Bless.
