Join Lucy’s Super Six Squad!
Help give Lucy the power of her own voice.
At the end of May 2025, our amazing Lucy turns six years old and instead of gifts, we’re asking if you’d consider joining Lucy’s Super Six Squad to help us fund a life-changing communication device for her.
Meet Lucy
Lucy is a bright, funny, and determined little girl who lights up every room. She also has Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that affects brain development, causing severe physical and communication challenges. Though Lucy cannot speak or use her hands reliably, she has so much to say and she says it with her eyes.
The Power of Eye-Gaze
Lucy uses her eyes to communicate with us every day. She currently uses a combination of paper-based resources, an E-Tran frame, and a method called partner-assisted scanning, where we offer her choices and she confirms with her eyes. This requires a lot of time, patience, and understanding from communication partners and while it works, it can be limited and means Lucy is totally reliant on others. A powered eye gaze AAC device alongside these other methods would give Lucy access to so many more opportunities and in particular independent, self directed communication.
We’ve seen Lucy thrive when she has access to a powered eye-gaze communication device. These devices use special cameras that tracks her eyes to let her select words, images, and phrases on a screen. With this kind of device, Lucy could gain a more robust, independent way to communicate at home, at school, and out in the world.
Why We’re Fundraising
These devices are expensive and hard to get funded through the NHS or local council. There are strict criteria, and unfortunately many of the requirements involve already demonstrating skills on a device – like needing to prove you can pass your driving test without having a car to practise in! Lucy currently has limited access to a shared device at school, and she’s doing amazingly well with it. But for this to truly be her voice, she needs her own device that she can access any time, especially at home and over long school holidays which are approaching when she currently has no access at all to a powered device.
We usually fundraise for charities, and it feels a little strange to ask for help for something so personal but the truth is, we’re trying to fund so many important things for Lucy, and her own communication device is at the very top of that list.
How You Can Help
To celebrate Lucy’s Super Sixth Birthday, we’re inviting friends, family, and any kind strangers to join her Super Six Squad by donating £6 or more towards the cost of her eye-gaze device.
Every donation – no matter how small – brings Lucy closer to having her own voice, and we’ll be forever grateful for your support.
Thank you for being part of Lucy’s journey. Thank you for believing in her.
With love,
Lucy’s family
