UPDATE: Lucy and ARF Ontario would like to thank everyone for your generosity and support! Thanks to your donations, Lucy had her preliminary appointment before surgery at OVC Companion Hospital in Guelph yesterday!
Lucy was a little groggy on her way home from sedation but is excited to announce that surgery is scheduled for July 15th!
Thank you!!!
Wee Lucy was rescued by Animal Rescue Foundation of Ontario when she was just two days old. She was found with her litter mates under a porch just days after being born after their stray mother passed away. She and her siblings were covered in maggots, severely dehydrated and barely hanging on to life. Unfortunately, three of her litter mates did not survive. Lucy kept fighting and it's a miracle she pulled through despite the open wounds on her abdomen caused by the maggot infestation.
ARF volunteers worked around the clock to save Lucy, bottle feeding day and night, and tending to the wounds on her wee body. By two weeks of age she was out of the woods and appeared to be thriving.
Unfortunately, around 8 weeks of age, Lucy began to experience ongoing UTI's (urinary tract infections). Despite several courses of antibiotics, the UTI's continued to reoccur and she was in discomfort daily. An ultra sound confirmed that Lucy suffers from ectopic ureters which is a rare condition and possibly caused by the maggot infestation. The ureters normally carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder but Lucy's connect abnormally and one is not functioning at all. This leads to continual and painful bladder infections and incontinence.
Lucy was referred to a specialist at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph. In order for her to live a pain free life, she will require a cystoscopy and repair.
This is a very specialized surgery with extremely limited appointments and Lucy has been offered a preliminary on July 2nd and a cystoscopy and repair on July 15th. The approximate cost is over $7000. Estimates from OVC are provided below.
This cost does not include standard vetting (vaccines, spay, etc.), numerous vet appointments, medications, initial ultrasound to diagnose and initial consult with OVC already spent.
This specialized surgery is beyond the realm of what our rescue can financially accommodate and funds are urgently needed by the beginning of July in order to proceed with Lucy's treatment. Any donations towards the cost would be greatly appreciated so Lucy has a chance at a pain free life. This wee girl has already been through so much from such a young age. Please help if you can to give Lucy the life chance she deserves.
