Love and light for Lucy’s fight ✨

This fundraiser is for the Galvins, a wonderful Sydney family who have recently been told that their 3 year old daughter, Lucy, has Ewing sarcoma - a rare and aggressive type of bone cancer.

Devastatingly, Lucy has been given a 15-30% chance of survival.

Her tumor was only caught by chance, literally in the blink of an eye. It is every parents worst nightmare - there were no symptoms or warning signs.

One evening in March 2022, while Sarah (Lucy's mum) was dressing the kids for bed, she noticed a lump on Lucy's rib cage, under her arm pit, as Lucy reached her arms up to have her pyjama top put on. That 10 second interaction, along with the quick reactions from Sarah and the family's GP, may just be what will save Lucy's life.

At 8.30am the following morning, after discovering the lump, Sarah and Lucy were at their GP's office. By 9.30am Lucy had received a chest x-ray, which showed tumors in her rib and lungs. By 11.30am they were admitted to Sydney Children's Hospital. In less than 24 hours they went from being a regular family, with plans of traveling, studying and socialising post-COVID, to being thrown into the frightening world of childhood oncology.

Cancer can be a very sneaky beast, especially in children. Lucy's tumor was not easily visible and she had no symptoms of disease, fevers or pain. However, due to its aggressive nature, the cancer has already spread to her lungs, which dramatically reduces her chances of survival. It appears her tumors grew and spread within just a few weeks.

The oncology team at Sydney Children's Hospital started work immediately to fast-track Lucy's treatment plan and she began her first cycle of chemotherapy a few days later. Her chemo cycles will run for 10 months and will require weekly stays in hospital. Lucy's full course of treatment will include chemo, surgery and radiation and is expected to run into 2023.

Ewing sarcoma has a very high rate of reoccurrence. Patients usually relapse within a few months, after treatment ends.

Lucy's father (Pat) is the sole provider for the family and runs his own business. It is anticipated there will be significant amounts of time that he will be unable to work. Lucy will spend lengthy amounts of time in hospital with one of her parents, while the other parent will need to be at home with their other two young children.

This fundraiser aims to offer financial assistance for the family immediately.

To make matters worse, Lucy will not be able to conceive children naturally after her treatment so any funds raised will also go towards IVF in later years, should she require it. Lucy is only 3 years old but she already talks about how she wants ‘to be a mummy when she grows up’.

Lucy is a very vibrant, cheeky little girl who is recognised by her head of bouncy blonde ringlets and gappy smile. She has two siblings, Grace (5 years) and Billy (18 months). She loves Barbies, Bluey, playing in the sandpit and cruising around the neighbourhood on her pink scooter.

Thank you for opening your hearts to Lucy's story, as she begins the fight for her life.
