Lucy's Final Year of College!

Donation protected
Lucy is in her final year of college! Help show her that the world is cheering her on to finish strong.

Lucy is attending a 3-year program at Chandigarh University in India where she will earn her Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Over 30 people donated $8,000+ to her previous generosity campaign - which has brought Lucy tears thinking about how many people are supporting her. She has been incredibly strong and successful these past two years, and we are now in the homestretch!

We are fundraising for her final year, which includes two semesters of tuition and books, and 9 more months of living expenses.

Just the same as  we have done in the past, Tim and I are committed to matching 100% of every donation. Each month, I will total the donations for the month and contribute the same until we hit our goal of $5,693. We also will take donations in Malawi Kwatcha, or other currency, in person or via Airtel Money (0998854873). I’ll add the amounts to the Go Fund Me once a month as well.

About Wonder Woman Lucy …

For those of you who don’t know Lucy, she’s an incredible person – curious, resourceful, capable, deeply caring. She is the youngest daughter in a humble family from Chiradzulu, Malawi. Growing up, she was an average student who successfully navigated government/public schooling, but always yearned for something more.

In 2012-2014 worked closely with Sarah, a Peace Corps volunteer in her village, and eventually got to attend Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World). Sarah helped Lucy apply to scholarships and investigate university options outside of Malawi. Lucy was selected to win an Africa’s Tomorrow scholarship to go to the US in 2015. Immediately, we all booked it in high gear and Lucy took the SAT and applied to several colleges. To all of our disappointment, we found out the AT scholarship was going to be less than we expected, a lot less than they promised, only $5,000 towards tuition in the US. Most schools we were looking at, even subsidized community colleges, would cost much more than that for a single semester, not to mention cost of living. We were heartbroken. After looking through all options in Africa, UK, everywhere we could, the barriers seemed greater than we could all overcome.

But Lucy was determined. She took matters into her own hands, and at a college fair in Lilongwe, she applied for an opportunity at an Indian university, just to see. And, she got in, with a scholarship! This opportunity was 100% hers. She navigated all of the logistics almost entirely herself – taking computer courses to get her up to speed, getting through the process of an Indian education visa, etc.

Now, two years in to a 3-year program, she has had many trials and tribulations. It’s not easy being an African woman at an Indian university! She’s had to learn how to self-advocate, smile and share African kindness when things are unfair or people are unkind, and find her own safe housing. But it’s not all been a struggle – she is enjoying continuing to learn Hindi, has found a fantastic host family, made so many friends, and is rocking a solid B average. I cannot be more proud of how she has completely owned her situation and made her own success. She continues to inspire me.
