Lucy the Irish Wolfhound puppy needs two surgeries
Donation protected
Hello Everyone. My name is Lara, my Husband Steve and I adopted Lucy the 6 month old rescue Irish Wolfhound puppy on October 7th, 2023. We got her health insurance the day after we got her but what is happening to her is considered a pre-existing condition so none of these surgeries or after care will be covered. We appealed their determination and lost. We are devastated.
When we were adopting her we were told that she was placed into rescue as a very young pup after her Mom stepped on her and broke her leg. She went through a series of three casts as she healed and they thought she was all ready for her new life. We adopted her knowing she would have a limp but was otherwise healed and fine. Unfortunately that was far from the case and there was much more wrong than anyone knew.
As she cuddled her way deeper into our hearts over our first few weeks with her, we saw that she was in pain. The limp was getting far worse and there were days that she did not want to get up at all. On November 17th we took her to our favorite Vet to be checked. Dr A did not like what she saw and recommended X rays. The X rays were done on November 28th and the findings were bad. Her knee caps were in the wrong place on each rear leg, she has hip dysplasia, one foot is rotated in the wrong position and (to get technical, from the Dr's notes:) "Right Distal femur loss of distal growth plate, patella medial displaced, prox. Right Prox. Tibial crest medially displaced, recommended to see a surgeon for Ortho consult and prescribed Rimadyl"
We then saw the very highly recommended Dr Davis the Orthopedic Surgeon at Red bank Vet Hospital in Tinton Falls New Jersey on December 7th and he said it will only get worse the longer it is left untreated. She needs surgery on each of her rear legs - one at a time. Notes from Redbank Veterinary Hospitals Tinton falls: "... signs consistent with Bilateral Luxating Patella's. These include Referred RDVM Right leg and Hip dysplasia. Currently she is on Rimadyl 100 mg PO BID. The lameness is bilaterally and seems to be getting worse with time, Severe bilateral pelvic limb lameness with a palpable right sided 4/4 medial patella luxation and a palpable left sided 4/4 lateral patella luxation"
The first surgery (on her right leg) is scheduled for this Friday 12/29/2023 with an estimate of $5200-$6400 (see estimate below)
I am just going to put it on my Care Credit card and pray that we find the money to pay the bill before the deadline for the interest is up. I do not have enough credit to cover it all though.
The second surgery on her rear left leg will follow 6-8 weeks later and be a similar cost to the first one. Then there will be months of medication and physical therapy to teach her how to walk well again.
Any help you can offer would be lovingly appreciated
She really is the sweetest love and worth helping
Thank you,
Lara (Lucy's Mom)
