Lucy joined our family on the day COVID lockdowns were announced in Ontario. We met her in a room at the Willow Lane Farms to see if she was a match for us and she played us like a fiddle. Crawling under our legs, resting her head on Steph’s arm, wagging her tail, and giving puppy kisses. We would look at another dog, but there was no point. We both knew Lucy had picked us and she was coming home with us immediately. On the drive home to Kingston, the radio announced that all stores would be closing the next day. We had to stop at the pet store on the way home for more supplies (including a new collar, the one we bought was MUCH too small for our girl).
For those of you who have met Lucy, you will know how special she is. She is the sweetest girl and the biggest goofball. She is a curious girl who finds so much wonder in the world. She loves to meet new people, smell new smells, explore new places, but mostly she LOVES toys. At her puppy obedience class the teacher said they have never seen a more toy-obsessed dog and Lucy may or may not have stolen a small stuffed frog toy from them (she got caught, but the lovely people at Luv-A-K9 let her keep it as a graduation gift). When we took her to distraction training classes in Calgary she was far more interested in the fake stuffed dog toy than she was the other dogs!
Lucy is our family. She has been with us across 3 provinces, 4 addresses, a global pandemic, countless smiles, and even some tears. She has climbed mountains and swam in the ocean. There is nowhere we would go that she wouldn’t follow, and as we move forward in life, we can’t imagine doing it without her by our side.
On August 26th, 2024, Lucy was diagnosed with cancer. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy which can not cure the cancer, but helps sustain her quality of life while waiting for the stem cell transplant. Without the stem cell transplant, she will die within 6-12 months.
Lucy is putting on a brave face through her sickness. She goes to all her blood work and chemotherapy appointments and never complains. Most people wouldn't even know that she's sick. She still loves to play with her toys and still has the boopiest snoot. When she isn’t chasing her frisbee or snuggling with her stuffies she can be found napping in her Big Girl Bed, or playing the Between the Legs game with her favourite people.
While this wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the TruPanion pet insurance coverage we have had for Lucy since the day we got her there will be many costs associated with the stem cell transplant procedure that will not be covered. These costs include the co-pay and taxes for the procedure, transportation from Nova Scotia to British Columbia, lodging for 3-6 weeks, and transportation and compensation for a donor. We expect the total cost to be close to 20k and our savings can cover approximately half of the expenses.
Lucy is our whole world and we would be so grateful for any support you can provide.
