Luckys Legacy

Donation protected

Lucky's Legacy began as a no-kill alternative to the Hobart Humane Society.  It is named for the sweetest, most loving cat who ever lived.  Lucky died of a congenital heart condition when he was three years old and Lucky's Legacy was born to honor his memory.  We began as a volunteer group for the Humane Society.  We took care of sick cats, walked dogs and eventually became a foster program.   Funds were raised to spay/neuter cats, get them tested for luekemia and FIV, and rabies vaccinations to make them more adoptable.  After a while, it became apparent that a great number of those cats were still being killed, not adopted and we left the Humane Society and formed a non-profit, no-kill rescue.
Since we began in November of 2011, Lucky's Legacy has been responsible for over 500 cat spay/neuters and over 50 dogs spay/neuters.  We have applied for and received 145 spay/neuter certificates from the State of Indiana, the rest have been at our expense.    We have had over 400 animals adopted, most of whom would have been killed had Lucky's not existed.  We have done TNR (trap, neuter, release) on several colonies of feral cats and hope to do more.
In November, 2015, we opened a store front location (we were previously foster based) to better serve the homeless animals who all deserve a chance at life.
We receive no money from the city or any other government agency and have scrimped and saved and sacrificed to keep our mission alive, working multiple jobs and doing without.
We have received sporadic donations of both supplies and money for which we are eternally grateful.  Words can not express the appreciation we have for that support.
We have a large vet bill that must be paid.  Our vet, Arbor View Animal Hospital, has been wonderful in working with us but can not continue to carry our balance.
Our landlord has been very helpful and we could not ask for more.  But, again, he needs his money as does NIPSCO.
In trying to do everything and being too proud, stubborn, stupid (choose your adjective) to ask for help, we have fallen behind both on bills for home and the shelter and have reached the point that we must ask for your help.  Anyone who knows me knows how difficult this is for me.  Like Benjamin, the donkey in George Orwells "Animal Farm", my mantra has been "I will work harder".
Well, I managed to break my leg and working harder is no longer an option, at least not for a while.  If I was Benjamin, a broken leg would mean I would be put down (not at Lucky's Legacy, though :)), so I guess it's a good thing I'm not Benjamin, or maybe not, lol.
We are working on ongoing fundraising activities to get the shelter to a self supporting state but have not reached that point yet.
If everyone who follows our page gave $10, we would be covered for the next 6 months.
If you can find it in your heart to help, the animals and our wonderful, dedicated volunteers thank you.
