Dear Lucky Bar friends,
I hope this message finds you as well as possible. I know all of us miss our beloved Lucky Bar, watching soccer and having such a wonderful time with the supporters and staff who have become dear friends. The safety measures that Mayor Bowser put in place in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus are vital to the health of everyone in DC, but obviously have an enormous impact on hospitality professionals like the Lucky Bar staff. They have no idea when they’ll be able to return to work, and even those who are eligible for unemployment benefits may face a delay in receiving – or even being able to apply for – them because systems all over the country are completely overwhelmed. I fear they’ll also be impacted by Euros and the Olympics being postponed until 2021.
Lucky Bar has been a staple in the community for decades (I actually went there on my 25th birthday, but let’s not dwell on how long ago that was). They have such a great variety of events, from salsa to soccer, and the staff members work so hard to make everything fun. I know a lot of us benefit from the DC soccer community they’ve created and sustain; if for no other reason than that it’s socially frowned upon to be downing a pint while you’re watching an 8:00 a.m. match in your living room, but it’s encouraged at Lucky!! We all have a home to watch (and, umm, politely cheer for) both club (EPL, MLS, Serié A, Ligue 1, La Liga, Bundesliga, etc.) and country, and I consider myself fortunate in that regard.
I created this GoFundMe account to benefit them during this time of uncertainty and show them how much we appreciate their hard work. I hope you’ll contribute whatever you’re able (a good starting point is the money you would be spending there if it were open). Let’s all show Alex, Alexander, Belen, Brian, Caio, Christine, Dakota, Jack, Javier, Jonathan, Joe L., Joe S., Kat, Louis, Manuel, Nino, Olivier, Paul J., Pierre B., Pierre D., Richard, Rose, Sama, Shannon, Sutrisno, Sydney, and William how much we appreciate the fun atmosphere they create for us every day. I’m working closely with Lucky Bar staff to ensure that all proceeds are distributed according to employment status and hours worked, and every single penny we’re able to raise will go to them. I know times are difficult for everyone, but please give what you can.
Cheers,
Sarah Grigsby-Reiser (proud Gooner, but I promise the rest of y’all can trust me)
