Lucas' continued fight

9.27.23 update

Friends and family- We recently learned of our sweet Lucas’ rhabdomyosarcoma reoccurrence. While we have no doubt that this brave five year old will fight hard to beat it again, we invite you to join in and support Lucas and his family.

Last week, our little hero underwent surgery to remove a mass from his lung. Katie and Matt are awaiting additional test results so that the Drs can decide the best treatment plan moving forward. Whatever it may be, we know there is a long road ahead.

The last round of generous donations helped to support the family with medical bills and meals during their countless overnights spent at the hospital. Any donation, big or small is appreciated beyond measure. Please also consider sharing with friends and family and remember to submit to your organization if they have a matching program. With gratitude ❤️

Friends, family and beyond: many of you know that our sweet Lucas was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS), a soft tissue Sarcoma after a bump was discovered on his bottom. His amazing oncologist and other supporting team at Smilow have prescribed Lucas an aggressive treatment plan consisting of weekly chemotherapy treatments in hopes of shrinking the tumor. While Lucas is responding well overall to the treatment and the cancer is shrinking, The Spears still have a long road ahead. Following his initial 12-week chemotherapy cycle, the doctors plan to surgically remove the remainder of the mass, followed by a 5-week radiation cycle with daily treatments. These treatments will be down at Sloan Kettering in Manhattan and will cause Lucas and Katie/Matt to stay down there each week.

As if everything you’ve read isn’t enough, Katie is due with their third baby at the end of June, just around the time that Lucas will be getting his surgery and subsequent radiation. Katie and Matt have been tremendous despite all that is going on – they continue to stay positive, find reasons to smile and laugh, get up and go to work, and give all of their love to Lucas and Avery.

If you know Lucas, you know that his smile brightens up a room! No one, let alone a child, should have to endure what he is dealing with. He has some great days and some days that cause him to be extremely tired. His hair has fallen out, but he still has a million-dollar smile. This Go Fund Me is being created to help Katie, Matt, Lucas and Avery with medical expenses, travel and lodging back and forth to NYC, meals to help ease the burden of having both a new baby and a child going through treatment as well as anything else they may need. No amount is too small, and whether you choose to donate or not, please keep The Spear Family in your prayers as they tackle these next few months.

Thank you so much
