We dream of turning high school Lycee Thierno Seydou Nourou Tall (LTSNT) into a worthy high school… We dream and believe in this dream.

What once was known as the high of excellence, is now only excellence in name, no longer in reality. 20 years after graduating, we came back only to find that our beloved school is falling apart, literally and figuratively.
LTSNT saw its first cornerstone laid in 1966 and since then has seen many children of Dakar grace its hallways and playground. A public school, run by principal Mrs Madeleine Annie Diandaul SANE COLY, LTSNT hosts roughly 1300 students from all corners of Dakar. Mrs Coly, the first woman principal of the school, is one of the most nurturing and caring principal, if not the most… not to take anything away from her male predecessors. Six years in this position, she still displays unwavered enthusiasm. With her modest yearly budget, she runs a tight ship: from the supporting administrative staff, to the teachers she partners with and empower to perform their jobs, to the students she disciplines, and eagerly rewards.
At the heart of the school, lie the students… what would the school be without its students? Innocent, naive, carefree, joyful, loud, cliquish.. In other words kids will be kids… they cracked a smile on my face for their loving, intelligent, ambitious and tenacious ways. Junior high or high school, they all share the same yard, and the same two buildings. The older ones do look out for the younger ones and it is touching.

1300 students are split into 31 classes, but there are only 26 classrooms: at any given moment there are 5 classes that shuffle around the school, in classes that are not occupied for that period.
Students’ desks in said classrooms are not in good condition at all; the teachers don’t have either a desk or chair; the blackboards are worn out after being painted black over and over and over again, but not one student has complained. I engaged in a small conversation with three 11th grade teenagers… I am seeing all that’s wrong with the school and it really saddens me, they saw all that was available to them as privilege and took none of it for granted. Teenagers wiser beyond their years for not complaining and being thankful for what little they have. I wanted to know them all personally. When asked how long they had been in the school. They all had been there since 7th grade. When asked where they lived, one walks to school; the other takes a gypsy bus for a short commute and the last one has a 2-hour commute one way to make it to school. She said that she might not attend next year because the commute is taking a toll on her and her family and her studies. It should not be like this and it hurts even more that she feels this way because she seems to want to stay in this school, with her friends whom she wants to graduate with.

I visited the bathroom and wondered how and when things escalated to this?! The entire bathroom facilities need to be gutted out and rebuilt adequately to respect privacy, and sanitary norms. What once was the gym, no longer is: the basketball court has no rims to shoot up hoops and the entire field is covered with sand. Beyond a first aid kit, the nurse office lacks necessary supplies to attend to students in case medical emergency. The computer and science labs need their equipment upgraded to be worthy of being called a lab.

The improvements/renovations list is long, but in a conversation with the principal, Mrs Coly reiterates that the cornerstone of education is indeed students, but teachers hold a special place in there and she’s got a dedicated team of teachers who show up still motivated and eager to teach. Alas the teachers need desks and chairs in their classrooms, the very basic for an educator. She wanted to first accommodate the teachers with materials that would allow them to be in a comfortable environment before attending to the laundry list of what needs to be done for the school.

LTSNT is a great public school, with a strong principal, dedicated teachers and helpful staff, yet the school is in dire need of some upgrades and improvements beyond the occasional superficial facelift. In line with this request, I am reaching out to former classmates, schoolmates, friends (near and far, of yesterday and of today) to help me raise $10000 needed to provide for the desks and chairs for the teachers.
