LSU Graduate Students Injured in Random Shooting

Donation protected
On Monday night, March 18th, 2024, in downtown Augusta, GA two LSU Graduate Students in the Department of Entomology were shot during a random act of gun violence while in town for an Entomology Conference. The students were gunned down in the street by an unknown assailant who escaped capture and was never seen by the victims. M. Danyal Khan received a gunshot to his wrist that shattered two of his arm bones. He required emergency surgery on his arm and will have a lengthy recovery. Carlos Rivera received a gunshot wound to his thigh. The bullet was partially deflected by his phone, but penetrated into his flesh so deeply that the doctors could not recover it. The bullet will remain lodged in his leg the rest of his life. While we are blessed that no one was killed in the incident, these injuries will cause tremendous financial and emotional strain on both students. Mounting medical bills associated with ambulance rides, surgeries, and other health care costs will only be partially covered by the limited insurance plans available to graduate student. Funds are needed to cover the costs of on-going treatment for physical and emotional injuries as well as day-to-day living expenses during this difficult time for both students.
