LSSU RobotBoat Team AMORE Competing in Florida

Lake Superior State University's Team AMORE has just returned from demonstrating innovative ideas in this year's RobotX Challenge in Sydney, Australia and are looking forward to developing new technology for the upcoming RoboBoat held in Sarasota, Florida, USA. While in Sydney, Team AMORE placed third in design documentation, which was based on a combination of video, technical paper, and two technical presentations, and received an award for collaboration with other universities.

RoboBoat is an international challenge designed to involve students in challenges facing the modern maritime industry. Teams must develop an unmanned surface vessel (USV) to complete tasks representing real-world coastal surveillance, port security, and oceanographic exploration. This year's competition will include tasks with ties to ecology and marine biology.

Team AMORE was started as an Engineering Senior Design Project proposed by Faculty Advisor Edoardo Sarda to develop systems for the 2022 RobotX Challenge. This international Challenge requires technical research and engineering project-solving to develop an autonomous maritime system (AMS). The AMS comprises a USV built from the Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel (WAM-V) and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The two unmanned vehicles work together to complete different maritime operations autonomously. The Senior Design Project was making the WAM-V into a USV, with the capability to be remotely or autonomously operated. The USV hardware and software were developed and tested both physically and virtually.
