Low-SES Senior in Need of Support

First of all, thank you for clicking on this link. Sincerely, it truly means a lot. You've clicked on my last resort, my final hope.

I'll be completely honest, this isn't my first fundraiser. But this also isn't my first time scrambling for money while at Reed. I am so close to graduation and I really need your help to get me there.

About me:

I am a senior neuroscience major at Reed college, hoping to work at OHSU shortly after graduation. I'm working on research related to autism for my thesis, and possible methods to help some deficits associated with it. I plan to continue biomedical research for the foreseeable future, to continue to combat various neurodevelopmental disorders. I will be graduating in May 2019. My life will forever be dedicated to bettering the lives of others.

I'm a first-generation student from Chicago. I provide for myself entirely (tuition, food, housing, etc.), and have for the entirety of my time at Reed. I work two jobs in the Psychology department, as a TA and as an animal colony assistant. I also nanny outside of school. However, even with three jobs I am still not able to catch up on my bills this month. I live with my partner who splits all of the bills 50-50, and even so we're short this month.

I really don't want to get to personal here, it's hard you know? Putting your biggest fears on the internet for everyone to see. But I'll give you the highlights--(see bottom for more info)***

- My partner's brother passed away recently (by violent means), which required a flight to Texas and a long time off of work. He lost his job because of this, and we've been struggling to catch up ever since. He has been helping me as best he can, but is still grieving and processing what has happened. He sold his car to try to make some money, but the money from it quickly ran out.

-Currently, our combined bank accounts, every dollar to our names, is equal to less than $300. We have no savings. We don't have parents who can provide anything at all.

-We have been struggling to afford food. We go to Reed's food pantry every week and it still hasn't been enough.

-I am in the middle of my thesis, the time when I need the most energy and brain power. I have been eating 1 meal a day for weeks, and trust me, not brain food.

So why do I ask for $1000?

That's less than what our rent/utilities are for the month. This won't provide any better food than we've been surviving off of. I just really, really need help and am scared to ask for too much. I'm scared in general. But this amount would help buffer our expenses, and perhaps give us some hope for December.

Please, if you or anyone you know has spare money to help me make it to graduation, pass this fundraiser on. Graduation is the only hope I have for myself and my family to make more money, and I can't do it without food or housing.

***I am more than happy to talk to anyone with questions about what I need/why I need it/or anything else that I may have left out here.

****I am working with rats for my thesis. For any donation > $25 I will let you pick a name for one of them and include it in its publication. I have 14 rats that need names :)

Thank you again for reading this. It means more than you know.

Much love, and fingers crossed,

Kate & Cannon
