Lowell High School Special Education Field Day

Help Lowell High School provide our LEAP (Life-Skills Education And Planning) and CSA (Classroom for Students with Autism) students with an invaluable, authentic, community experience. We are requesting donations for our field day which will include: a DJ, lawn games, a food truck, an ice cream truck, and a photo booth.

What We're About:
With 90+ students and 30+ staff members, the Lowell High School LEAP/CSA program is a world of amazing and unique individuals. As teachers and paraprofessionals, we strive to help our students translate the skills they are learning in the classroom, into the real world, so they can become active members of their community. With our school being in the heart of downtown Lowell, we are fortunate to be able to walk through the city and practice different skills like communication, self-advocacy, budgeting, safety, awareness, and much more in an authentic environment. However, when it comes to practicing those life skills in a recreation and leisure environment, we run into the challenge of obtaining funding for such events (i.e. restaurants, stores, bowling, movies, etc.).

What We're Planning:
At the end of each school year, we get together for an annual end-of-the-year celebration. This is a time when teachers, paraprofessionals, service providers, and students come together as a community to engage in recreation and leisure activities as a whole program. During last year's celebration, we played lawn games (brought in by the teachers), listened to music (DJed by a teacher), danced, and shared a meal (served and bought with teacher and community donations). This year we want to incorporate outside vendors so the students can practice their learned life skills with non-familiar adults. For example, asking the DJ for a specific song to be played, informing a caterer of their dietary needs, or asking to have their picture taken.

Why We Do It:
To demonstrate, practice, and celebrate students' acquired skills.

What will the money be used for?
The donations we receive through GoFundMe will be used to purchase a food truck for this event. The remaining funds will be applied to providing the students with a DJ, bottled water, snacks, and t-shirts.
