Dear reader,
My name is Mary Kelly and I am a sophomore at the University of South Carolina. A month before I moved into college to begin my journey here in Columbia, my boyfriend Justin Lopes, a rising senior already at Carolina and a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, passed away. As especially difficult as my freshman year was, I was overwhelmed by support within the Greek community at USC. As time passed I began to look around and realize how many other people in the Greek community at USC were struggling with a similar loss. All of us have experienced loss in one way or another. It may not have been your boyfriend, but it could have been a friend, or a friend of a friend here at Carolina. I noticed that as close of a community as we are, there was still a void. What we have been lacking is a way to positively celebrate the lives of these amazing people together, as a Greek Community. That is why I am annually hosting the Low Country Boil for Justin Lopes. Last year the event remembered Justin with a great band, tasty food, and even better company all while raising money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This year however, the idea behind the event is bigger. The theme of the Low Country Boil is 'Greek Village Remembers'. We will be celebrating Justin's life, along with the lives of other members of the Greek Village who have recently passed including Hailey Bordeaux of Phi Mu, Charlie Terreni of Pike, Toby Cassels of Kappa Alpha, and Julie Tamborino of Alpha Chi. The 2nd Annual Low Country Boil will be held October 15 at the Cotton Gin from 7-10pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2nd-annual-low-country-boil-for-justin-lopes-tickets-16418420939 . Tshirts for the event can be purchased at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f45adaa2dabf85-2ndannual . A portion of each tshirt sale benefits the event. The event is only possible with your donation; every dollar helps. All of the net proceeds of the event will be distributed to the philanthropic organizations of the sorority and fraternity with the most members in attendance. Come out and help us make a difference.
Gratefully,
Mary Kelly Butler
