Loving and Remembering Dayana Echeverry

Donation protected
On August 11, 2020, our beloved Dayana lost her two-month battle with COVID-19.  Day is remembered by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her as a firecracker, whose smile was as bright as the sun, and whose laughter filled a room with joy.  Everyone she met became an instant friend.

Day was born in Colombia, but grew up in Queens, New York.  She loved Unicorns, the Little Mermaid, and all things pink.  She also loved the Mets, the Bucs, and the Lightning.

Day was the first in her family to graduate college, and after college she went on to law school, where she met her husband, Edward "Tony" Hughes, or as she would call him, "My Tony."

When she graduated law school, she was selected by her classmates to give the valedictory speech at graduation.  Her speech embodied who she was, and who she would want her friends and family to be in the wake of her loss.  She said:

"Who we are is a great predictor of how great we will be, and we are great.  We are fighters; dare I say, scrappy.  When you start to worry about the future, stop and remember this moment.  Remember what we've been through and who we are, and remember our story.  We may not know what is ahead, but we will persevere."

Day and Tony were married in Las Vegas on November 24, 2018, surrounded by their family and closest friends.  It was one of the happiest days of her life.

Day spent the last week of her life with Tony and her loving mother, Gloria, by her side.  Day was also blessed with the opportunity to see her sisters, Ingrid and Stephanie, her brother, Andres, and her father, Julio, before she passed.  Day's family was the pride and joy of her life.

Following Day's passing, countless people have reached out to know how they can support Day's family and honor Day's memory.  This fund is intended to serve both of those purposes.

The full extent of the medical bills and other expenses related to Day's treatment and passing is not yet known. Donations to this fund will be used to help the family offset some of those expenses.

Funds will also be donated in Day's honor to charities selected by Day's family that champion causes important to Day, including women's rights, racial equality, social justice, and child welfare.

At this time, the family has elected not to have a formal funeral or memorial service, in an effort to prevent further spread of COVID-19. Day's family and friends are encouraged to have calls; video chats; and small, socially-distanced gatherings to grieve and remember Day.  The family hopes to hold a more formal memorial for Day next year, when people can come together without fear to remember and celebrate Day.

Please feel free to share cherished memories of Day on this page for others to enjoy.
