Lovin’ on Lurie (Rachel Lurie)

My dear friend, Rachel, has taught me so much about what it means to be the kind of friend that is chosen family. Rach (or RayRay as my spirited 4 year-old, Sydney, calls her) has been in and out of hospitals since the beginning of October and was finally admitted to Princess Margaret December 17 to undergo treatment for Aplastic Anemia. Aplastic Anemia is a condition that occurs when your body stops producing enough new blood cells. The condition leaves one more fatigued and more prone to infections and uncontrolled bleeding. It is a rare and very serious condition. Rachel will be in the hospital until the end of January at the earliest. The road to recovery will be a difficult one and continues after discharge including a variety of medications, home nurses and likely other costs that may not be covered by the universal healthcare.
