Love Light Project in Lesbos Greece

Dear friends and family,

I was very honored to be given an opportunity to join the forces of my dear friends at the Third Wave Volunteers on the ground in Lesbos, Greece. All I want to do for Christmas is to go and help, please make this possible.

On a daily basis thousands of refugees fleeing war torn homes are arriving in Lesbos seeking a safe haven. Most of them arrive in darkness. Our team is on the ground, providing medical care, food, and warmth as soon as the overpacked rafts arrive on the island… and we give them a solar puffs light to illuminate their way.

My main role in this operation will be to change the clothing of children, traumatized from horrific memories and soaking wet from a treacherous journey across the sea, into clean and warm clothing. My hands are needed everywhere though, from water rescue to food prep.

After the Third Wave Volunteer welcome, the families have to climb a rocky and steep terrain, usually at night, to get to the refugee center, an old prison located 30 miles at the top of the hill. This prison, designed to house 500 inmates, now houses thousands of refugees seeking asylum in Europe for two weeks or more while their papers process.

There’s something else… those of you who know me as an artist know how passionate I am about how meaningful an illuminated symbol can be. Thousands of life jackets litter the shores of the port. As well as volunteering on the ground, I want to gather these life preservers stack and combine them with solar puffs lights to create a light installation that will provide a beacon of hope for these families. Each of these jackets represents a soul that made it!

While I am still in the creative throws of figuring out my main concept, I want to use Ancient Greek influence and create pillars of light to make the shoreline visible in an otherwise pitch black night, as well as an illuminated heart at the our refugee center to welcome them.

This weekend, many of us are reflecting on a feast in which we give thanks for our friends and family, our health and home, our peace and freedom. I am asking you to give, so I can give back.

I would like to leave New York during the holidays for 2-3 weeks (in approximately 3 weeks from now) and put my abilities into good use; volunteering and creating at the same time.

I need around 3 thousand dollars to make this dream into a reality. All proceeds will go to the travel expenses, the installation project (solar puffs) and providing refugees with blankets and heat supplies as winter is fast approaching.

While this is measly a stop on a very long and dangerous journey for these families, I want to show them that our love can light up the darkness.

Anything can help. Anything will help.
