Fifteen years ago I met my best friend Valerie and at the same time I inherited my second mom, Liz. Throughout the years Liz has fed me, drove me numerous places, listened to my stories, but mostly importantly she has loved me unconditionally. Looking back now, it's no surprise she would welcome me with open arms, she has the biggest heart! Even when I moved away for college she would still call to just say hi and chat, we would laugh about my lack of cooking and Val's latest adventure; I could of never imagined that my Mexican mother was sick and had been dealing with ESRD, a kidney failure disease.
Liz first found out she had kidney disease when she was pregnant. Her pregnancy was considered high risk because her kidneys were not functioning properly and she was forced to have a c-section 3 weeks early due to the pressure it caused on her baby. In addition, she was advised not to have anymore children because of the risk and stress it put on her body and the baby. After giving birth, she was taking up to 8 medications to keep her disease under control.
In 2010, she was placed on the the transplant list. In addition to being mentally brave and strong, she has also been prepping her body to be physically ready as well. Between eating healthy and exercising, she's also been doing dialysis since 2014, going in 3 days a week for 3 hours a day. Currently, her kidney functions at 6% with the help of dialysis and now she's finally in a place where her body is ready to take on a new kidney!
While excited and hopeful, the financial burden of the medical care and medicine needed has set in. The immunosuppressive medication, needed to ensure her body is prepped for a transplant, could cost anywhere from $1000-$5000. Without these types of medication, the medical center will not proceed with the transplant unless they feel she can afford the medicine. Even with health insurance, the worry and stress of medical bills has not diminished.
In an attempt to repay her and show her the same love and kindness, I am raising money to go towards her medical care. Liz, is truly one of the most selfless, beautiful, and resilient people I know and I couldn't think of anyone more deserving of a healthy kidney; so please consider donating what you can so we can help keep her in transplant ready shape.
Thank you!
