Emergency and medical bills

Hello Facebook friends and family,
As many of you may already know, my sister, Lisa Bernal-Del'Monte, was brutally attacked by her ex-husband several nights ago after he broke into her home and relentlessly attacked her only a few hours after police had escorted him off of the very same home for which he had been trespassed. I will spare you most of the gruesome details of this attack (as I’m sure they will come to surface when Mr. Bernal is either brought to trial or pleads his case out), however it resulted in her admission to an intensive care unit at the nearest hospital.
This senseless and violent event occurred in front of her two boys who are ages 9 and 5. When Mr. Bernal entered back into Lisa’s home, he did so surreptitiously through the doggy door and ambushed her. He took her phone deliberately in order to stop her from obtaining the assistance of law enforcement. Both of Lisa’s children have unfortunately been witnesses to this type of behavior from their estranged father but it has never risen to this level. The event was so horrific that they hid in a pantry and, thankfully called the police to intervene.
Despite the courageous efforts of these young children, Mr. Bernal achieved what he sought out to do; he savagely beat her leaving her hospitalized with a broken nose, multiple injuries to her face, and eyes. Particularly troubling is the fact that Lisa is now suffering vision problems from this vicious attack which may have lasting effects. Although it is too early to know the full extent of her injuries, Lisa has already incurred significant bills as a result of her hospitalization and her recovery treatment will clearly increase that debt. One of the many issues she is now facing is the fact that she did not have any health insurance at the time of her hospitalization and her bills will be extensive.
For those of you who know my sister Lisa, it is obvious that she is kind and loving soul. Her desire to help others and her capacity for love is endless. Despite Mr. Bernal’s known history of aggression and drug use, she has always given him repeated opportunities to be a presence in their children’s life, conditioned upon his sobriety. Despite being divorced due to his infidelity and drug use, Lisa kept Mr. Bernal’s surname (even after being remarried). It speaks volumes of her love and desire to see him better himself but actions speak louder than words. Lisa, in her everlasting entrepreneurial spirit, opened up her first business this year, Ritzy Rags. In an attempt to reincorporate Mr. Bernal back into her children’s life and give Mr. Bernal some sense of purpose, she allowed him to come to her store and assist in its renovation and remodeling.
Those of us closest to Lisa know that Ritzy Rags is her second love (after her children). She has been so committed to the success of this enterprise that she would often sleep in the back of the store because she would be working all night on making this dream a reality; her bed being a mere sleeping bag in the back of the store and no doubt dreaming about people lining up to try on her flamboyant and extravagant clothing. Knowing the importance of this dream Mr. Bernal shattered my sister’s front window by throwing a rock through it in a fit of rage, stealing items from the store, and generally vandalizing the place. She was forced to close the store and business, which is her sole source of income, was and it is still clearly affected. Her sacrifice, her generosity, and her forgiveness was repaid by this ugly act.
While we pray for justice in this case, my sister is left with ER Bills, time off work in order to heal, and most likely looking at surgery after being attacked. We are hopeful that her vision problems are temporary and this act of violence will not leave her permanently disfigured. We are on our way back to emergency for the swelling. It is with a heavy and humble heart that my family and I are requesting the help of all who know and love Lisa (and those of you who do not know her will undeniably fall in love with her beautiful soul when you meet her). If you're able to donate any amount to help offset the astronomical medical expenses that she has incurred as a result of Mr. Bernal’s attack, it would be a true blessing. Lisa has not made this request because she has never asked anything from anybody. My sister has always, and will always, be the strongest person I know.
