On June 13, 2023 Logan Jensen, age 38, passed away after a seven-week battle with autoimmune encephalitis and NORSE. On April 22, 2023, Logan had a seizure at home. The seizure was not stopping so his wife, Laura, called 911. Paramedics arrived within minutes and rushed Logan to the hospital. Seizures continued in the ambulance and in the ER. Logan was admitted immediately to the neuro ICU and placed on a ventilator. Due to continued issues, Logan was placed in a medically induced coma to rest his brain. Logan was battling autoimmune encephalitis and the rare disease called NORSE.
NORSE is defined as new onset refractory status epilepticus in a previously healthy patient without an obvious cause. Logan was healthy with no history of previous seizures. There was no way to prevents this, nor would you think this would happen to such a healthy, strong man like Logan. NORSE has been studied extensively since 2005. Through the Norse Institute, Laura will continue the NORSE research by allowing them to study Logan’s case.
Logan was surrounded by family and friends during his hospital stay. The doctors, nurses, respiratory therapist, hospital staff worked tirelessly to help Logan. Laura, his mom & dad, brother, sister, and other family and friends fought to keep Logan alive. They never gave up on him and Logan never gave up. He was strong and in the end his body wasn’t able to continue due to multiple organ failure.
Logan was a physician assistant who specialized in mental health. His wife Laura is a registered nurse who specializes in mental health as well. Their passion for helping patients in this area made them the dream team. After working with this patient population, Laura decided she wanted to be able to do more. Laura started the master’s program for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner in March 2023. Throughout the seven weeks of Logan’s illness Laura never gave up fighting for ways to help Logan recover. Her love is truly unwavering. She was by his side in his hospital room studying for school while researching Logan’s condition, and advocating for Logan’s care on a daily basis.
There have been numerous people who have reached out who love Logan and Laura wanting to help. Unfortunately, there is great monetary cost added upon the physical and emotional cost as Logan fought to survive. We have created this GoFundMe to help Laura will any unforeseen and future costs that may arrive with this tragedy.
We will never understand why Logan was taken from us at such a young age. What we do know is that Logan lived his life to the fullest. He loved to have fun. He loved to snowboard, go to concerts, ride motorcycles and off-roading vehicles, boogie board and go to amusement parks. He loved going on adventures and traveling with Laura. Logan worked hard and he played hard. He was compassionate at his job, and with his family and friends. Thank you for the outpouring love and support for Logan and Laura during this horrible time. We miss Logan tremendously.
