Legacy 90.1 FM is a community radio station in Moss Side and Hulme that plays a mix of Caribbean island sounds such as SOCA, Afro Beats, calypso, R&B, hip hop and more.
Community radio stations like ours have fallen through the cracks in Government funding during the pandemic and we have seen our income plummet. We have the skills and knowledge to rebuild but we need the time so we are asking you to help us pay our rent while we re-stablise ourselves so we can continue to support our community. Listen here to our own DJ, Denise Southworth tell you more:
Legacy 90.1 FM was established in 2008 and has given a voice to the African Caribbean community, especially women, older people and young people who are often left out of national discussions. Our broadcasters have worked at home over the pandemic to stay in touch with our listeners who have been isolated and lonely at home. The African Caribbean community has suffered during the pandemic with our older people falling victim to the virus at 3 x the rate of other people. We are a community that is collectively grieving and our radio station has a vital role to play in our recovery.
We have a lot of ideas and plans for future programming that will help to assess the true impact of the pandemic on people living in Moss Side and Hulme, and to add the voices of our local people to national debates that help all of us learn from this crisis so that we are better prepared next time. We won't be able to put any of those ideas into action without a station to operate from.
The amount we are fundraising is the cost of our rent for 12 months. Having this available will allow us to focus on supporting our community to heal and to providing them with the information, knowledge and advice they need to cope with the aftermath of COVID-19. Will you help us help them?
Even if you can only give a couple of pounds, we will be forever grateful that you have decided to help us survive and rebuild. Our community needs the comforting voices of our DJs and presenters now more than ever.
