Love For the Grover Family

Donation protected
If you are lucky enough to have met the Grover family, I won't have to explain to you how special they are.

If you haven't, let me tell you a little bit about them: they are a loving, creative, loud, hilarious, ridiculous group of people, and they're entering the final phase of an incredibly complex and winding journey together. This, more than any time before, will require immense support  from their loved ones, and from strangers, and from anyone who is moved enough to help wrap their arms around these people in a time when it's impossible to do so physically.

Mike was diagnosed with glioblastoma thirteen years ago, and he and Lea (and then their three daughters, who came slightly later) have been living with this reality ever since. He has recently experienced a recurrence, and to quote Lea: "We are out of options. What we have left, in unknown quantities, is time."

In order to make the most of his time remaining, Mike has decided to transition to in-home hospice care.

The expenses that the Grover family are facing are significant, and multifaceted-- while Mike is insured, insurance is unclear on what hospice treatments they will cover, and our #1 goal is to keep Mike comfortable as long as possible without worrying about costs. Hospice care is, by its very nature, open-ended-- in a best case scenario, Mike will be with us for a long time, staying home as he wishes, in minimal pain. We don't want financial considerations to ever be the reason that his time with his family is cut any shorter than it has to.

There are also the end-of-life expenses to consider, and a mountain of medical debt accrued over the past 13 years, and living expenses to consider for Lea and the girls.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for considering donating to this cause in a time when everyone is feeling extra burden and stress.  To hear Lea interview Mike about his thoughts on death for NPR's StoryCorps, click here .
