A Desperate Plea for My Mum's Recovery
As I sit down to write this, my heart is heavy with a mix of emotions: sadness, worry, hope, and a hint of shyness and embarrassment. For the past year, my family back in Indonesia has been struggling financially and mentally, and I have come to realize that it's time to seek help. I am not one to usually share our personal struggles, but I am willing to put aside my pride to ask for your support and help. Our beloved Mum, the pillar of our family, is fighting for her medical condition in Indonesia, and I am reaching out to you, dear friends and strangers, to ask for your help in supporting her medical expenses.
It all started on December 30, 2023, when my Mum woke up with a limp body, unable to move or respond. We rushed her to the hospital, only to face a series of challenges: no available beds, multiple hospital transfers, and finally, a diagnosis that shook us to our core - COVID-19, pneumonia, and meningitis.
My Mum was isolated for a full month, with no visitors allowed. We were only updated on her condition through text messages. The day she was moved to the general ward was a relief, but it marked the beginning of a new set of challenges. She became withdrawn, stopped talking, walking, eating on her own, and also developed severe eyes problems. The meningitis had damaged her brain, leaving her with a slim chance of returning to her normal life. The past year has been a nightmare.
The doctor discharged her for home care after she spent two weeks in the general ward. To ensure she receives the best possible care, my Mum moved from her own house to live with my younger sister, whose home is better set up for her needs and has improved sanitation. Meanwhile, my youngest sister is caring for my Dad, providing him with the love and support he needs during this challenging time.
As my Mum is now in home care, she needs to see specialist doctors every two weeks. This has added to the financial burden, as we need to cover the costs of transportation, consultations, and medication.
When COVID-19 hit, my sisters lost their main source of income and still haven't been able to get back on their feet. The financial struggle has been ongoing, and my Mum's medical expenses have only added to the burden.
When my parents were young, they worked hard to meet our daily living needs. As a result, they were unable to save much for their old age or afford health or life insurance, leaving them vulnerable to financial struggles in their later years. To make matters worse, they do not receive any pension support, and the government health system in Indonesia is limited and complicated, offering little assistance or relief.
As for me, I am still caring for my toddler and have applied for several jobs that accommodate my circumstances, but unfortunately, I haven't been employed yet. My husband works diligently as a council worker, and together, we carefully manage our finances to support my Mum's medical expenses. Whenever possible, we also make it a priority to visit my parents every 18-24 months, cherishing the time we have with them and making memories that will last a lifetime.
That's why I am turning to you, dear friends and strangers, for help. My Mum's medical expenses are piling up, including:
-Tracheostomy, catheter, and feeding tube replacements
-Diapers, powdered milk, filters, oxygen, and disinfectants
-Home care services, including nursing care and rehabilitation therapy
Every little bit counts, and I am grateful for any support you can offer.
If you are worried that I might be a scammer, I completely understand. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly. I would be more than happy to provide you with evidence of my Mum's condition, including video calls with her, to reassure you that this is a genuine plea for help.
Please help me give my Mum a fighting chance. Your donation, big or small, will bring us one step closer to getting her the medical care she needs. I am counting on your kindness, generosity, and prayer.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Yenny
