Love for Letty, the tenacious battle

Hello everyone, my name is Jody and I’ve had the opportunity to know Letty Heim since middle school. Those hazy memories of a person that became part of my world, played clarinet and loved people and friends. Fast forward to now when she is fighting her second battle with cancer, after a 10-year remission in between. This second round has metastasized and spread. It has left her battling quite literally for her life. She has undergone many operations, some scheduled, some to manage infection and issues that have occurred. Letty is undergoing treatment and currently has her lung drained weekly. Most recently, Letty was found to have tumors on her retina and just saw a specialist to determine the best course of treatment.

Letty has managed to continue working as she has battled through this second war with cancer. She has continued to be the stubborn, and, as she would say, the impetuous person she has always been. Which when I look up the definition of impetuous, I can see that she has continued to move forcefully and rapidly through this battle. When I think of Letty and our friendship over the years, she has challenged me and others in many things, not only to increase my vocabulary. I would say she is tenacious, in a positive way, never giving up, never stops trying and very stubborn. She’s challenged all of us to find hearts and love in the universe, to warm our souls in the sun, to survive the best that we can and carry our beauty wherever we go.

Letty has incurred many medical expenses during this second battle already. She will continue to have medical expenses to cover in the form of copays, treatment coverage, travel and some overnight hotel stays. Letty currently travels locally and to Philadelphia for treatment. She is also in the process of planning her timely next steps in disability and retirement to be able to concentrate on her care. This will leave her with a gap in income from when she stops working until her next financial steps begin. During that gap in time she will still have her mortgage and bills on top of her medical expenses from cancer.
