Dearest family and friends,
On May 3rd, 2022, Kelsey Acers’ father died suddenly at the age of 68. He had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer, a rare and aggressive type of cancer, only one month ago. With a grim prognosis, her father underwent surgery on April 20th. Though the surgery itself was successful and he was expected to survive, he sadly passed away due to complications.
Kelsey has a mother and sister that reside in South Dakota and are both disabled. Kelsey now remains their sole caretaker. Though Kelsey resides in Alexandria, VA, she had been flying home frequently during the past two years to care for her family. In the spring of 2020, at the start of the pandemic, Kelsey’s mother underwent emergency surgery due to the sudden onset of an infection in her leg. The severity of the infection left the doctors no choice but to amputate one of her legs. As a result, Kelsey’s mother has been in a rehabilitation center where she has been undergoing intense therapy. Her father had been assisting with the care of her mother until he fell ill.
In addition, Kelsey’s older sister is disabled. Her sister Tammy was born with spina bifida and remains confined to a wheelchair. Tammy requires permanent, round-the-clock care. Before the leg removal, Kelsey’s mother was a stay-at-home mother to provide round-the-clock care for Tammy. However, when Kelsey’s mother was unable to continue this, Kelsey’s father took over Tammy’s care.
As you can imagine, the sudden loss of her father has sprung Kelsey into uncharted waters. She is to care for both her mother and sister while working to support them. Due to the many medical needs of the family, there are few savings. Her mother is unable to work due to her condition. Though Tammy has since been transferred to a permanent medical facility, there will be many financial burdens ahead. We hope that we can help ease the burden for Kelsey in these next few months. Kelsey is preparing to pay thousands of dollars to cover the remaining medical costs associated with her father’s surgery, his funeral expenses, and the costs of ongoing full-time medical care for her mother and sister. There are also anticipated moving costs, as Kelsey will need to return to Alexandria at a later date to tie up her affairs.
Many of you know Kelsey from her years as a dedicated schoolteacher at Escuela Key Elementary. For nine years, she selflessly served the community and worked alongside many families and colleagues. We hope that we can now return the service to her and her family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
