On Aug. 1, 2019, my nephew, Dan Scollard's thumb was severed and 90% of the tendons in his index finger severely damaged by someone using a circular saw. His thumb was re-attached after a 7 1/2 hour wait for a surgeon. The surgeon was able to repair 20% of his finger's damaged tendons. On Aug. 27th Dan was told the re-attachment was not taking and he would need to have the dying portion of his thumb amputated. The longer surgery is delayed, the greater Dan's chances of septicemia become. Dan will need at least 2 additional surgeries to further repair his finger. He is looking at 1 - 1 1/2 years of physical therapy. The expenses for the surgeries already done, plus the additional needed surgeries and physical therapy are expected to exceed $80,000.00. Dan, his wife, Becki, and their 4 children, Kal, 17, Ava, 10, Hannah, 7 and MJ, 4, are life-long residents of Forest Park, IL. Dan and Becki are active members of St. Bernardine's Church and Dan is a devoted family man and community volunteer.
Dan has a long road and a lot of work ahead of him before he'll be able to use his finger again, not to mention learning how to re-use the portion of his thumb that will remain after amputation of the dying section. Dan's always worked with his hands and it'll be quite some time before he'll be medically cleared to do any kind of work again. Donations of any size, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.
