Love for Ami

Donation protected
Aminata Barry was born in Guinea, West Africa on a memorable July 1st, becoming the third of five children. She immigrated to the USA in 1997. Aminata was a loving wife,  and the mother of three beautiful children, Aicha, Fatou, and Sariah. She met the love of her life, Patrice, and married him in 2009.  Ami was a dedicated manager at Starbucks. She joined the awesome company in 2004 as a barista and worked her way up to store manager in 2010, running some of the busiest stores in Manhattan. Ami was kind and loving. She had great work ethics and always strived for the best. She blessed everyone she met with her energetic and loving personality.

Ami always puts others before herself. Aminata was the pillar of her family. She loved her family extraordinarily, caring for both of her parents, her daughters, and her husband were her reason for living, She also loved her career at Starbucks and her team.

On August 23, 2020, I received a phone call from Ami. Her voice was very low, so I asked her what was going on. She told me that she has been at the hospital for two days. “ Why are you at the hospital?” I asked. She replied with “ I am sick”. I was thinking that she got diagnosed with COVID-19, but she said that she had a throat infection. I was very confused so I asked her again, what was going on. She told me that the doctors told her that she has leukemia. First I thought I didn’t hear her correctly so I asked her to say it again. She then hung up the phone because she was crying. I called her back and she confirmed her diagnosis, I screamed so hard. I ended up crying as well so I hung up the phone. I called back an hour later and told her that I was so sorry for crying and instead I should be strong for her. As a healthcare provider, I am always the one to break this kind of news to my patients, but I never understood how it felt to be on the other side. On that day, she told me that when she got diagnosed, she didn’t think about herself, she only thought about her daughters, especially Sariah, because Sariah is only 9 years old. Her biggest worry was if she died early, Sariah wouldn’t remember her. I told her that she would not die and would be at her daughter’s wedding, which made her laughed.

We later learned by the oncology team the type of leukemia she had was AML( Acute Myeloid Leukemia) and that she had a 70% survival rate with intensive chemotherapy and potentially a bone marrow transplant. We were super hopeful with that survival rate, and soon after she started chemo. A week after starting chemo, she started to experience headaches, itching, and vomiting, but her desire to live was stronger, and she fought through it.

On September 16, round one chemotherapy was done, she completed another bone marrow to evaluate the effectiveness of the chemotherapy. Unfortunately, we didn’t have good news, as the doctors told her she would need to do a second round of chemo. She was very disappointed, because she had already spent a month at the hospital and missed her family dearly. She  wanted to go home but now realized she couldn’t. The second round of chemo was extremely rough for her.  she was losing her hair, her weight, constantly vomiting, headaches, and the intense Chemo weakened her Heart, adding another level of complexity to her treatment plan. but being the strong person she was, she simply was thinking “ I don’t want my daughters to see me like this”. She wanted her strength back, so she could go home and hug her girls. Unfortunately, Aminata wasn’t able to return back home to her girls.

On 10/21/20 at 9:30am and just 43 years old, Ami lost her battle with Cancer.

Aminata Barry was a loving person who excelled in all her roles. She was a caring soul who had a contagious energy that spread to those around her. Ami, whose life was taken by leukemia so suddenly so fast, will forever be remembered and loved by her husband, three daughters, family, her Starbucks family and friends.

Treating patients with leukemia, especially AML type is extremely expensive

Her 2 months stay at the hospital which included two rounds of Chemotherapy, bone marrow test, cardiologist, a team of specialists, daily medications, and countless other medical test and exams, have left her husband and 3 daughters with a mounting hospital bill of more than $92,000 dollars. Its heartbreaking enough loosing a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend.

Her family now have to deal and settle her medical bill on top of funeral cost and their living expenses.

So we humbly ask for your support of her family and

Anything you can give, and we mean anything will be graciously appreciated

We understand these times are hard for everyone, but if you’re able to give please contribute. Ami was a selfless person, she put herself last, for once we would like to show up for her, and show up BIG.

Thank you All dearly.
