Our close friends, Anthony Barreca and Michelle (Barreca) DeMartino, have lost both of their parents within 5 days of each other. This GoFundMe was created to help provide funds to them during these difficult times.
You could always see Susan Barreca with a smile on her face and extremely happy to see you, even if she didn't know you well. She would always ask about your family and truly be interested. Susan, as well as Anthony, Michelle and their immediate families, contracted COVID-19 right before Christmas 2020. She was admitted into the hospital within a week after developing pneumonia. Susan had many procedures within several weeks to help assist with her battle but it proved too much. Susan was called to eternal life in Heaven after her strong and courageous battle on Thursday, February 4th.
Since 2009, Ralph Barreca has been fighting terminal cancer called Chordoma. He has been an extreme fighter having multiple surgeries to keep it at bay. In 2020, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Ralph was placed in an assisted living home for memory care to assist with his round-the-clock care and help with his quality of living in the height of the pandemic. During this time of lockdown at his memory care facility, he coincidentally contracted COVID-19 around the same time as his family members from a nurse who was directly caring for him (after not being in contact with the family). Ralph was monitored for several days without showing symptoms but then symptoms occurred and he was taken to KU Med. COVID-19 proved to be so strong and sped up his Alzheimer's and he was placed in hospice care. Ralph passed away peacefully in his sleep and was called to eternal life to be with his Bride of 40 years on February 9th, 2021.

Anthony and Michelle are both very involved with this community so let's find a way to help them! Anthony works to assist with retirement plans and is an active assistant coach for KC Chiefs Youth Football program. Michelle is an amazing advocate for the deaf community and has been an essential worker during the pandemic working as an interpreter during many of the Mayor's televised Press Conferences. Any funds raised will go directly to the family for any expenses that have or might occur including time they have had to take off of work and burial expenses. All remaining funds will be donated to the Chordoma foundation.
