Louis André Martinet Memorial
Doação protegida
Last year the final resting place of Louis André Martinet was found after a years-long search. It has always been a mystery why his death and burial were not noted in the local newspapers considering his importance to the black community. According to recently uncovered cemetery records, Louis’s remains were interred in a vault in Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans in the vault with his daughter who died as an infant in 1884. There is an engraving on the vault for his daughter but nothing to indicate his final resting place. The reason for his missing marker and lack of anything in the local papers about his passing is probably due to Jim Crow laws at the time of his death in 1917. As our family represents some of his closest relatives (his one surviving daughter had no children) we would like to honor him by installing a plaque on the vault he shares with his daughter and having a family memorial service at the gravesite. All are invited to attend, and details of the installation of the marker and memorial service will be provided at a later date (months away from now).
The plaque has already been ordered and initial planning for the memorial has been started. We are soliciting donations from the family to help fund this effort.
