Louie's Wellness Fund
In March of last year, my dad was diagnosed with a cirrhotic liver and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. We have spent the last year adjusting to this new normal and keeping him as comfortable and happy as possible. Unfortunatley during this time, he is unable to work or drive, and although challenging, we have tried our hardest, along with family and friends, to keep him company and get him where he needs to go.
After a couple months of testing last summer, we received great news from his team at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston that he was accepted onto the liver donation list. Since then, we have been patiently waiting for him to get sick enough to move to the top. When we started this journey, his team in Boston warned us that it could be a long while before it was his turn. As of right now, we are approaching a year and he is not getting any sicker.
Which is why we have made the choice to get him duely listed at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. The demand for livers is less in that part of the country, and we are hopeful he will move to the front of the line faster. One of the clinic's requirements is for the patient to be no further than a 5 hour drive from the facility. Therefore, relocation is a must.
He begins the testing process all over again in Jacksonville starting May 22nd, and we are so lucky to have the support of my mother's sister Gloria who generously offered her home and caretaking while my parents are on this leg of the journey. While my dad waits, the current plan is for my mom to maintain her job up here and fly down intermittently until he either gets too sick and needs her support as well, or they get the call for transplant.
I am creating this Go Fund Me in hopes of helping my parents transition to their extended stay in Florida. Flights back and forth are expensive and really add up. I will be sharing your generous donations with them at the send-off party we are having on May 13th...until then, let's keep it a secret!
And of course, prayers and well wishes for a quick wait and healthy, uncomplicated healing process are always welcome!!
Thank you for your time and support, you all mean so much to us!
Love,
Courtney
