Lost our home due to hurricane
About a year ago, I located a 1980 Hunter 36 foot sailboat in Miami for a very decent price, but I knew some work needed to be done. Because my work schedule is time consuming, a friend of mine went to get it for me. The boat was dry docked for about six months to make it comfortable to live aboard. I finally launched her in the water on May 3rd, 2016.
My then girlfriend, Lesley, who is now my wife, and I lived happily on the boat since then. We spent a happy summer enjoying our life living in it and creating wonderful memories. Because of the cost of boating insurance for named storms, we only had liability coverage which is the requirement from the marina.
When hurricane Matthew hit our coast, all docks around our boat were destroyed, and they severely damaged the hull, causing our boat to sink.
We lost all our personal belongings, all the things that anyone would have in their house. We followed all instructions from the dockmaster to secure our boat. If the marina docks didn't broke loose and batter the boat, she would still be floating. It is unreal to me that the marina did not have any kind of liability for the damages. Now to make things worse we are responsible to have our boat removed from the water. The Coast Guard is concerned about oil and fuel leakage. The cheapest estimate I’ve found so far is $5,000 to bring her up from the water.
After the heartbreak of seeing our home under water, dealing with the aftermath is even harder. Any help you can give us in this difficult time would be so greatly appreciated, not only to get her out for salvage, but also as we start out from ground zero to rebuild by locating a place to live, purchasing furniture, appliances, clothing, and with deposits that are needed, etc....
Thank God for my job to pay my bills. I am so grateful to have my work family of 16 years at the Columbia Restaurant. Thank you all for your concerns and your support, especially from Mr. Richard Gonzmart, with his staying connected with me and offering all the help he can give.
Thank you.
