Lost my job & my cat went into heart failure

Donation protected
My name is Haley and I'm raising money towards the cost of medical expenses for my cat after having been suddenly let go from my job of two years when my position was eliminated the same day he suddenly went into heart failure.

My beloved cat's name is Moose. He's a beautiful, kind, charming fellow and my closest companion for the past 6 years. I adopted him at 10 weeks old about a month after my father passed away from cancer. We've been inseparable ever since, a special bond like no other.

Wednesday evening, when I had come home from work after being released from my position, we noticed he had very shallow, rapid breathing out of nowhere and rushed him to the nearest ER vet. Halfway through the car ride he was open mouth breathing and crying out. When we arrived they took him right away to start critical care. He was placed in an high-oxygen kennel after receiving fluids and some other poking and prodding as well as an x-ray. It was determined he has fluid in his lungs and is experiencing congestive heart failure. They're administering diuretics to drain the fluid and we're praying that he'll be able to breathe on his own soon. The update as of this morning and afternoon is, we're working on trying to get the fluid cleared from his lungs and get him breathing on his own to take pressure off of his heart.

He hasn't been in the hospital 24 hours yet and our bill has already racked up to nearly $3,000 and is expected to continue to rise as long as treatment is required. We are praying hard and sending him strength and love but all the while we have no idea how we're going to pay for this.

My fiancé Dominic and I are getting married December 2nd as well, which we are paying for mostly ourselves and with the help of family. We have been working hard at paying down debt and student loans, only to be tossed right back to the bottom of the heap.

More than anything, we just want Moose to be okay. We want to bring him home, but these procedures and constant oxygen are expensive and we're running out of options. The vet will call us to reevaluate in the morning and see how much progress he makes overnight. In the meantime we are trying to get things in order while I also search for jobs. This happened so suddenly and my heart is breaking at the thought of not having enough money to continue treatment. Air gasps from my lungs at the thought of not bringing him home again. There will be a hole in our home, our family and my heart.

Edit: As of Friday morning, based on the vet’s report showing fluid still in his lungs and him still being fully dependent on oxygen, it wasn’t likely he would be able to come off it soon and if he did, he was a high risk for another incident based on the severity of his heart’s condition.

We are absolutely heartbroken but feel blessed that we were able to at least see Moose again and tell him how much we love him and hold him close. Moose went to sleep peacefully in my arms on Friday morning. The goal amount has been updated to the final total of our medical costs, since there won’t be any additional to come.

Thank you all immensely for all the donations and outpouring of love for our little guy. There is a huge void in our lives without him here, but we find some small comfort knowing he is resting peacefully and not suffering. Thank you for your continued support and sharing the link with whomever you know as we grieve Moose and hold on tight to each other during this unimaginable time.

All donations will be used towards paying for Moose’s medical care.
