My name is Danica- I am a 27-year-old local pilates and yoga instructor in Santa Cruz. I found my dream home up in the mountains and was feeling optimistic-creating my business proposal, writing grants to open a sustainable, organic cafe in town as well as organizing a donation-based outdoor weekly fitness class to keep the fitness community together since our Capitola studio shut down. I left my home in the Santa Cruz mountains Saturday morning- kissed my kittens, watered all of my plants, then left to see my dad in Oregon for a week. After an interesting conversation with my landlord about packing light - I decided to pack only my essentials- comfy clothes, toiletries, and a pair of sandals.
Wednesday night- after a lovely day, I got a call from my landlord to inform me our house had been evacuated because the Santa Cruz mountains were on fire, and boulder creek was burning at a rapid rate and just yesterday we had gotten confirmation that the fire blazed through the hills incinerating not only our house but the entire neighborhood. The most beautiful peaceful, serene place I have ever had the pleasure of living- gone within minutes.
on top of not having work teaching pilates and yoga to fuel my passions and now not having a place to call home is a lot.
As sad as I am that I have lost all of my belongings I am so grateful for all the love that I have felt from friends and family- helping me through this fire, offering me help to move stuff and a place to stay. I looked in the back of my car, piles of clothes, a pair of shoes my laptop, a camera and two kittens. I have what makes me whole- I don't need a big place or fancy things- I see this as an opportunity to build my life on wheels so I can have a home anywhere I go and don't have to worry about fires!
This gofundme is to help me because I don't have renters insurance and I don't have work because of covid- I would like to raise money to buy my dream trailer so I can create my home on wheels, buy a solar panel, and replenish my plant collection! Luckily, material possessions are just that and I am so fortunate that we were okay and made it out. I will also be donating 10% of my proceeds towards other fire evacuees that have been displaced by the fire so anything you can helps greatly!
