Lost Everything: Help Rasheed and Mr. Briggs

Words can't describe the amount of help, LOVE, and support that this wonderful family has received in the last few hours. While their Amazon Wishlist continues to be funded, we are also working on trying to get them housing. We need your support!  The cost of living in NYC  is outrageous, so to help with this transition we are trying to raise enough money for the security deposit, get utilities started, help with rent, etc. Any help would make a difference, even if its sending some words of encouragement and positivity their way!

Below is a letter from Rasheed:
My name is Rasheed Briggs and I’ve been attending Highbridge Green school since 6th grade. I had been living in my house for about 9 years. My favorite parts of my house were my turtles and my bed. I say my bed because because it was big and soft and plus I could sleep of course. I love sleeping. And my turtles because they were funny, cool and they kept me company when my dad was at work. Unfortunately, my turtles did not make it from the fire but my dad and myself are safe. I am 13 years old and I live with my dad who is 63 years old and very hardworking. We would really appreciate any help so that we can begin to rebuild our little home that we will hopefully have one day. There are many cool things I would love to buy, like a sweater, clothes and things that I lost. But I know that I can’t have it all. Together with my dad we will get through it but  first getting small things that we need every day. So thank you in advance for helping us or keeping us in your prayers. If I could I would give you all a hug, and share my jokes and tell you about how much I love football. But because I am not near, I just want to say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart and am sending you a virtual hug. Sincerely, Rasheed

What happened?

On the day of the incident, I was having a great day in school. I did not lose any points, I had all 3’s on my independent tracker and was excited to go home. After school, I was walking with LeQuice, my cousin and I told her I was going home. Her mom who was also walking with us said there was a fire there……when she said it I did not believe it. At that moment I did not have any feelings.  We went to my house. As soon as we turned the corner I saw that it was burnt down…. I was devastated, but my first reaction was to call my dad. He said he was on his way. He then called me back and said he couldn’t leave early because they told him he had to finish his job hours. (He works in a company FJC as a security guard 10am until everyone leaves, which is 8 or 9 pm). So I waited in LeQuices house until my dad got back. At around 8:30 pm, we went back to the house to see if we could find anything. At the time it was dark, so it was hard to see. So we went back the next day and I was able to find my dad’s weights and a burnt baseball. That is all I had besides my bookbag and the uniform I was wearing. We reached out to red cross and they directed us to the shelter in Queens. But it was too far for us to commute from Bronx to Queens. Especially for my dad’s job and for me to attend school. We reached out my aunt, and asked for shelter. So that is where my dad and I are for now, in my aunts small apartment. We are hoping to find a place soon. We applied for four apartments and trying to see if we can qualify for one and once again start from the beginning.
