Lori Jacobson-Hesse was 9 years cancer free from a diagnosis of breast cancer that left her bedridden, which she fought really hard to get rid of. She succeeded with determination. However, 9 years later, in September 2015, she was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer as she found a lump on her chest. She was lost for words.
She was suggested to go to Grand Rapids to get it taken care of. She met up with one of the doctors there and had a PET Scan and blood work taken.
During this time, Lori, as assertive and determined as she is, found that MD Anderson, based out of Houston, Texas, was one of the most prominent hospitals that excel in cancer research. She decided to sign up to be seen at MD Anderson. After a day or two she was in their system as a patient.
After being accepted to MD, she was on a plane 2 days later to head to Houston, TX.
After seeing her doctor, she was prescribed 3 types of drugs to wipe the cancer away. After 3 months of taking the medicine, she went back to MD Anderson and had a PET Scan taken and blood work done. Two days later, the doctor showed Lori the before and after photos of the scan. Low and behold - she was 98% cancer free.
8 months later, the insurance company decided not to pay for the medicine. This prohibited Lori to receive the medicine that was saving her life. After fighting the insurance company for months while back in Michigan she was only able to receive the medicine through MD Anderson. The problem is that with not having those drugs in her system constantly - it stops working. UNFORTUNATELY - the cancer came back and has spread back into the bottom of her spine and her liver. After a drug stops working the insurance won't pay for the medicine, which exceeded over $30,000 a month.
Lori found another clinical trial that the hospital has been working on. There were only two vacant spots left for patients. Lori decided to take one of the spots since there weren't many other options available.
This trial includes having to be in Houston for over a month with the following month having to be there for two weeks and then after the 2 month mark she'll have to be heading down there every month. This is very costly and will prohibit her from working full-time.
The funds will be used for travel, lodging, food, gas, car rentals, parking, medical bills, co-pays, medicine, mortgage bills, and other expenses.
The funds are needed as soon as possible as she will be heading to Texas for her long recovery from this terrible disease.
Lori has stated that she is so appreciative of the love and support that her family and friends have shown and that she has all of you in her prayers.
