Loretto College at Drama Fest Provincials

Donation protected
For over 41 years, generations of Loretto College students have participated in the National Theatre School of Canada Drama Festival (formerly the Sears Drama Festival).

Out of 50 Toronto schools, we have been selected to perform our original production "A Dark Horse in Low Light" at the provincial showcase!

Now we're faced with a new and formidable challenge: getting to Provincials in Brantford, Ontario (May 8-11).  As always: we're broke.

We need your help to offset the cost of:
- The participant's fee ($1360)
- Transportation ($1000)
- Accommodations ($3349)

"A Dark Horse in Low Light" is a powerful expose of the systemic bias in photographic technologies. It has already garnered us a series of prestigious awards.

District Awards
- Journey To,  Award of Excellence for Direction
- Outstanding Design
- Outstanding Production

Regional Awards
- Company, Award of Excellence for Advocacy
- Outstanding Production

I'm Sara Pedrosa,  staff advisor and Loretto College alumnus. I  participated in the 2000-2003 festivals under the direction of the legendary John Lynch. I see this opportunity as the fulfillment of Lynch's vision. It is an original production that has young women developing excellence and leadership in artistic communities.

Artistic Statement "A Dark Horse in Low Light":

Photography is more important to our generation than any other. We communicate who we are through a series of carefully selected images. We choose the images and we think that means control. But, how the camera sees us and reproduces us is really controlled by someone else… the people who sell us the technology. These people have measured us all against one standard. Camera default settings are set for white skin, a fact that has erased people of colour from family photos, yearbooks, magazines and the IG explore page. Our show is a story of self and collective realization. It’s a story about how we define beauty. It’s a story about breaking down biases and asking how can we can change not only our own social prejudices but the technology we all use to reinforce them.

We’re excited to present the layers we have developed in our writing,
performance, production, and sound design. We challenged ourselves to use multiple forms of technology as part of the design to have it work for, rather than against our characters. We show that those who control technology have the power to tell the stories of people of colour. Our sound design is a merger of western, African and Asian influence. It is played live in front of an audience by every single member of our racially diverse ensemble both musician and non-musician. We are all connected in our struggle against “normal.” This story is for people who internalize images that define them as “other.”
