Lorenzo Rothwell Memorial Scholarship

Donation protected
Lorenzo Rothwell was a founding member of the Pride of 2013 at KIPP Gaston College Preparatory.  Tragically, Lorenzo passed away on December 16, 2018, just one week after his twin brother, William, earned his college degree from NC A&T State University.  Lorenzo and William had made a plan that first William would earn his degree, and then Lorenzo would return to school in January to earn his own.

A group of his former teachers sat together reflecting on Lorenzo, and what most stood out to us all was his selflessness. On the baseball field, he earned All-Conference by pushing his teammates to be winners, modeling the intensity and work ethic he expected of them. With his family, he was selfless in making sure that his twin brother William, his mom and his grandmother were provided for, all while waiting for his own turn to start back on the path to earning his college degree.  As a student at our school and a member of our larger community, Lorenzo always put others first.

It is because of the values that Lorenzo lived by that Brett Noble, Lorenzo's 11th Grade English teacher made the founding donation to what has become the Lorenzo Rothwell Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Although Lorenzo was not able to complete his own degree, we want to make sure the example he set allows other students to earn theirs. The values  Lorenzo modeled will live on through the Lorenzo Rothwell Scholars, graduating KIPP seniors who demonstrate the very same values for which Lorenzo will be most remembered.
