Lorenzo developed eczema at the age of one and over time it worsened.
Despite trying various steroid creams and immune suppressant medication, his condition didn't improve. He was later prescribed Dupixent (a biologic treatment) but unfortunately it didn't work for him.
Before a family vacation to Mexico, doctors considered putting Lorenzo on Rinvoq (another immune suppressan) despite it not being approved for his age group.
While in Mexico, Lorenzo became unconscious and was hospitalized. The doctors there discovered that Lorenzo has a severe deficiency in white blood cells, making it hard for his body to fight off infections.
Further testing revealed clusters and enlargement of lymph nodes, leading the Mexican doctors to suspect Wiscott-Aldrich Syndrome and/or lymphoma. Either diagnosis would require a bone marrow transplant, as chemotherapy is not a viable option due to Lorenzo's condition.
The Mexican doctors strongly advised against putting Lorenzo on Rinvoq, warning that it could be fatal within three months. Due to financial constraints, Lorenzo and his mom, Nikol, returned to Canada to seek further testing through the Alberta Health System.
Recent blood tests showed extremely high IGE levels, indicating that Lorenzo's body is fighting an unknown threat. However, the Alberta Health System's strained resources mean that further testing and treatment may take months, with a potential requirement for a one-to-two-year stay at the Children's Hospital.
In contrast, the medical team in Mexico has a clear plan for testing and treatment, but financial support is needed to make this possible. Any donations would go towards medical expenses, accommodation, and basic needs for Lorenzo and Nikol.
As friends, we would like to ease the financial burden so this family can focus solely on Lorenzo's recovery. Please consider helping in any way you can and share around. We'd love to show this family they are not alone in this fight.
