Lorant’s Recovery Journey Traumatic Brain Injury

Hi, my name is Aaliyah and I created this account with hopes that it could be a platform where we can all come together and raise money to support my husband Lorant and our family during this difficult time. The goal is to use these funds to alleviate the financial load that accompanies long recovery journeys such as what Lorant is now experiencing. Thank you so much for your continued love and support.

On Sunday August 6th, after almost a full week camping through beautiful Yellowstone, our family decided to spend the last leg of our summer camping trip on a quick visit to Devil’s tower national monument. While hiking around the tower’s north face boulder field, just off Tower Trail, my husband, while taking a higher route than the kids and I, suddenly lost his footing and tumbled sideways off a 30 foot cliff edge onto the rocky slope below.
Lorant was quickly airlifted to the nearest neurosurgical team capable of treating his injuries and within hours he was at a hospital in Rapid City, SD where he was rushed into the emergency room OR to receive critical care. By the time I arrived at the hospital, scans were take, processed and had revealed that he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, what the neurosurgeon later called a Diffuse Axonal Injury. Along with a large brain hemorrhage, he sustained extensive skull fractures, broken ribs, a pulmonary contusion, fractured knee, wrist and many abrasions and deep lacerations over his entire body. Fortunately, his brain bleed stabilized within the first 6 hours and was no longer considered a serious risk for surgery after 3 more scans over 24 hours revealed no signs of secondary injuries from intracranial pressure. Although this was good news, he was far from in the clear. Lorant was fighting tough odds in the first 48 hours, and as if to be the answer to our prayers, during that time he not only maintained stability but he began showing clear signs of improvement. We were in the ICU for 5 days, where Lorant was under close observations, evaluated daily and later began basic rehabilitation such as eating, drinking and walking. Soon after he was able to do those tasks without assistance, he was taken to general medical care, where he was able to rest and officially begin the long road to recovery. We remained there for a few more days before we were given the option to either continue with inpatient rehabilitation in Rapid City or transfer the rest of his treatment to providers close to home. After a heart to heart with the nurse practitioner who was there assessing Lorant each day, and getting a personal confirmation from our neurosurgeon that he was for sure good to go, I decided that going home may be the best option for him in his condition. I was given guidelines to care for him and a long list of follow up specialists to find and schedule appointments with. He was discharged Saturday evening and we arrived home Sunday morning.
It has been almost 2 weeks since we arrived home and although his external injuries are healing well, the trauma taken by his brain will likely take months if not years to make a full recovery. Even so, Lorant has already been proving to be such a miracle fighter for his comeback in the face of this adversity. Since he has been home he’s regained conscious control and awareness, his headaches and mental fatigue are no longer constant, he’s recovered quite a bit of longterm memories and has even been able to make new memories. His balance has improved significantly, along with his verbal communication, ability to concentrate (briefly) and many other cognitive functions.
